The Kids of CFA
At the heart of Compassion for Africa is our vision to birth a new future for the abandoned kids of East Africa. It’s why we exist. Take a moment to meet the very kids that captivated our hearts. They are grouped together according to the group homes in which they live.
(Short biographies on each child were written by the pastors of their group home and can be viewed by clicking on a child’s photo.)

Sometimes their landlord used to throw them outside for not paying rent. Jane has not been performing well at school since she used to be sent away by the teachers due to lack of school fees. Diana is the last born in a family of three siblings. Her aunt who is the only sister to her mother decided to take her since she was the youngest and the others were left to take care of themselves. Her aunt stayed with her and after a while she changed and started to mistreat Diana. Her aunt who is self employed used to go to the market and Diana was left at home to look after her aunt's small child while other children were going to school. Diana's aunt used to deny her food, give her tough house chores to do and when Diana couldn’t finish her duties, she was beaten thoroughly and was forced sometimes to sleep outside. After a while the neighbors saw it was too much and they decided to approach the authorities who were able to trace her elder sister to take her. Diana's elder sister is unemployed and has been surviving by the help of well wishers and church. She had nowhere to stay as they were hosted by the neighbors. Diana's sister decided to seek help from the local area chief and was referred to Cana.

Then the Auntie decided to bring her to Cana to seek help since she was unable to take care of her own 3 kids and Victoria and her siblings. During our own investigation we found that there was a big need for help because the auntie was selling bananas on the streets for the survival for the rest of the children so we admitted her.
-
- Grace Wambui was born September 7, 2005. Grace is a total orphan; her mum passed on when she was 5 years old due to breast cancer and her dad died a year later after their house burned while he was sleeping. Thankfully Grace was at a neighbors at the time. She was taken later to her grandmother who mistreated her to the extent that the neighbors complained to the local chief, who recommended her to be taken to Cana Children's home. Grace has really lacked parental love and this is seen through her lonely countenance and struggle. We have done a lot of counseling since she has come to Cana and she seems happier with her life.
-
- Maureen Mumo was born January 4, 2006 and is an orphan whose mother died of HIV/Aids related cases. Her father who is also sickly, was not able to take care of them and decided to take Maureen together with her siblings to up-country to live with their grandmother. After the grandmother died they were left to take care of themselves as there was no adult left to watch over them. So Maureen together with her other siblings were sent out of school due to lack of school fees and other learning materials and decided to go to the streets to beg for food. Many are the times they slept without eating food and even staying for many days without taking a
bath due to lack of soap and water. Her father was helpless since there was nothing he could have done for he was jobless and bedridden. His neighbors decided to go to the chief and requested if the children could be helped and supported in any way because they were getting sick with skin infections, malnourished, malaria, pnuemonia and they feared that they could die. Then the area chief brought them to Cana Rescue Center and we agreed to take Maureen with her sister Emmaculate.

Lucy and her brother were taken by one of their aunts who is the only sister to their mother. Her aunt is a single mother taking care of Lucy and her brother including four children of her own. Since the aunt is unemployed, Lucy was not going to school or even eating food on a daily basis, which was a problem. Lucy together with the other siblings used to go door to door to beg for food and clothing while her aunt has also been trying to find help from churches and neighbors. It reached a time they were even staying for days without eating. Lucy’s condition grew worse as mosquitoes bit her, since she was not sleeping under a mosquito net. Their neighbor who has been helping them by offering food, advised Lucy’s aunt to seek help from the area chief and thereafter she was referred to Cana Rescue Center even as the chief is trying to find a permanent solution for Lucy’s aunt and the remaining children, since they are boys.

The situation then became tough for her poor mother who was jobless with three siblings to love and care for them. Brigid’s mother looked for a job in Cana Rescue Center and became the house-mother of the girls in the group home. Brigid was very sickly before coming to Cana so it is a blessing that she was able to be there and receive care. Brigid came when she was 3 ½ years old. Margaret decided to bring the issue of her other children to the director of Cana concerning how the kids were undergoing a tough situation in a rural area. They were not able to live with her at Cana as they are boys and she didn’t have the money to support them where they were staying. Therefore Brigid needed a sponsor as her mother makes very little money while trying to sustain three children on a tiny income.

She has not been attending school regularly as per required due to lack of uniform and other learning materials. Life has never been easy to Kasiva as she used to stay many days without eating food and when it was too much to bear, she went door to door to beg for food. Her uncle is a casual labourer and is also alcoholic, the little money he gets he used to drink instead of taking care of his family. His wife decided to pack and left him with Kasiva since she couldn’t take it anymore as she used to be thoroughly beaten when she was asking for food. Kasiva went to school with torn clothes and barefooted and at times refused to go back home. Kasiva's teachers were concerned with her situation and decided to consult one of the voluntary children officers for help since they feared the uncle could harm Kasiva if she returns back home. Rose performed poorly at school since many are the times she never attended school due to lack of tuition money and had no school uniform. Rose used to wear torn clothes and also she was malnourished. Sometimes her mother came home with no money or food since it’s not always everyday for her to get work. We told the security person to look around and try to see if there was anyone claiming the child and found none. Since it was getting dark we decided to take her, bath and feed her, change her clothes and make her comfortable. We reported the case to the police, area chief and children’s department and they told us to take Mercy and give her care and protection as well as love.

- Veronica was born April 6, 2014. Veronica Bosibori and Lydia Nyakala are blood sisters. These two sisters are vulnerable orphans who lost both their parents in June 2018. THey both lived with their poverty stricken parents who worked on other people's farms to make ends meet. They managed to educate their children and offer them at least a meal a day. However, in June, their parents were ruthlessly murdered by thugs, leaving the children in a small house. The neighbors took the responsibility of buring them. After the funeral, the children were abandoned by everyone and faced difficulties. They were mourning their parents, lacked food, stopped going to school and went everywhere roaming for food. Neighbors reported the issue to the area chief, who approached their uncle who lived in that are, and requested him to support the children. Instead, he abandoned them and continued with his life of drunkenness; he would often beat and verbally abuse them threatening to kill them. On hearing about the family from the local chief, Cana Rescue Center accepted to rescue them. The children have been at the center since 9/5/18. Since they have been traumatized they need a lot of counseling, care, and support to start having hope of living as they seemed to have lost all hope.

Edith, the senior housemother, learned of the struggles of the older lady and presented the need to us. We prayed and felt the need to take David. David still remembers the ghetto very well and he is always happy to go visit grandmother and his brother but he does not want to spend the night there. He had not attended school previously therefore he was behind. His teachers feel that he will catch up are working with him to do so. David loves running and playing soccer and wants to be a builder.

- Cissy Naktao was born March 2, 2002. She has a fraternal twin sister Juliet Bebirye. Following the death of the mother, the father dumped the three-week old babies at the home of an American missionary lady. Unfortunately she also didn’t live long. She passed away when she had returned home for treatment. A YWAM team working with AIDS patients in the village learned of the fate of the children and they brought them to us.
